Steel Decking
Steel decking is economical, lightweight, and strong. It can handle heavy loads and offers excellent structural support. It is also relatively quick to install. However, corrosion is a risk if moisture is trapped beneath the roof.
Preventative maintenance, proper drainage, and protective coatings can extend the life of steel decking.
Structural and Lightweight Concrete Decking
Structural concrete is extremely durable and moisture-resistant, making it a preferred choice for high-rises and industrial facilities. Lightweight concrete, which uses a metal form, is more vulnerable to damage but is often used where weight reduction is important. While concrete decks rarely require complete replacement, repairs can be complex and costly, and they often involve specialized installation techniques.
Plywood and Wood Decking
Wood decking is common in smaller commercial or multi-family structures. It is inexpensive and easy to work with, making it a cost-effective choice. However, if not properly maintained, it is prone to rot, warping, and water damage. Local building codes and fire ratings may also restrict its use in certain applications.
